What’s Your M.O. ?

This morning, as I was reading my bible, this verse smacked me right in the face. Proverbs 21:2, You may believe you are doing right, but the Lord judges your reasons. The Message words it like this, We justify our actions by appearances; God examines our motives.
So often we do good deeds, not out of love, but for recognition, or maybe for approval; either from God or friends or family. While those things are nice, you can’t earn God’s favor. Nothing you do or don’t do makes him love you less. As far as friends and family are concerned, if someone loves you for something you’re doing for them, that love will fade quickly. Any little bump in the road and the relationship could crumble.
I’ve said this before and it bears repeating. You can do good things all day long. You can get praises from your peers, and pats on the back until your back is bruised, but nothing brings more joy than obedience to Christ. If we get that part down pat, then the rest comes a little easier.
Everything we do boils down to motive. Why are we doing what we do? Is it out of love or just to get a result? If it’s the latter, that’s called manipulation, no matter how “good” it looks. Today, I’m checking my motives, will you?
