Called To Be Set A Pizzart, Fo’ Rizzeal!

Back in the day, in my life B. C., I was a huge rap music fan. I loved NWA, Easy E, Ice Cube, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, and Eminem. Fo’ shizzle! I even went to the Up In Smoke Tour in Atlanta, and boy, was it ever! Up in smoke, that is.

It sounds so funny now, to say that that’s the kind of music I used to listen to, especially considering how incredibly white I am. Now, I cringe at the thought of the lyrics, and the fact that I used to think it was ok.

I remember when I decided to live for The Lord. My music was one of the hardest things to give up. I was convicted of listening to it, and I didn’t. But, I held on to it for a long time. I couldn’t bring myself to let go of the CDs.

Why do we hold on to things that we know are not good for us? Why do we even want to tamper with things that we know are not pleasing to The Lord? God’s calling His people to be set apart. It matters what we watch and listen to!

This morning I was reading in Deuteronomy, where God’s telling the Israelites to take over the promised land. He tells them to destroy their gods, and burn down their alters and their Asherah poles. He says, don’t even get greedy and take the gold and silver veneers form the idols. Destroy every evil thing! God didn’t want them leaving any evil. He was calling them to be set apart. When God tells you to get rid of something, even if its something valuable. He expects obedience. He expects that you’ll trust Him to replace what you’ve lost and multiply it with good.

I didn’t want to throw away the CDs I had spent so much money on. I kept thinking that they might be worth something one day. I thought, maybe I could sell them at a yard sell and at least get some of my money back. But God said to me, “why would you pass something to someone else, that I’m telling YOU not to listen to!” So finally one day, I bit the bullet, and chunked them all in the garbage can! God then replaced my love for music that wasn’t pleasing to Him, with a love for music I once thought was cheesy…contemporary Christian music. There’s even good Christian rap music!

God never leaves us feeling empty. When He tells us to walk away from something, it’s for our own good. Obedience is what God desires the most. Don’t hold on to things God’s telling you to let go of. Don’t give the devil any room to get his foot in the door! Let’s be set apart!
