Playing The Game

When you were a kid, did you ever play the game Mother May I? Just about everyone has. It’s a classic game that teaches us to follow directions.

If you’re like me, sometimes it’s hard to keep paying attention when there’s other things going on. Next thing you know, you’re asked to take three baby steps and you do it pretty as you please, and you’re OUT! You forgot to say “mother may I?”.

That’s how I’ve been at times with serving The Lord. I’ve been asked to do something, and jumped right on it, but haven’t said “Father may I?” The next thing you know, I was more worried about pleasing people, than pleasing God. I thought that if I didn’t do everything I was asked I might let someone down. The next thing you know, I was OUT! Burned out, put out, down and out…because I was not in the will of God. I wasn’t doing anything that was necessarily wrong, it just wasn’t what God had for me.

Serving The Lord isn’t about doing something just because you’re good at it, and its not about doing everything you’re asked to do. It’s not about who does the most or gets the most attention. It’s about being in God’s will. He might have us step out of our comfort zones but He’ll never leave us stranded.

I highly doubt God would ever ask me to do a cartwheel or teach math for His kingdom. Anyone who knows me knows those are areas in which I totally suck. However, He might ask me to pray with a stranger in Walmart, which would make me extremely nervous! He might ask me to give someone money in some form, because He knows I like to keep mine. You get the picture.

Whatever it is we want to do. Whatever it is we’re asked to do. Let’s ask ourselves these questions. Are we trying to please God or man? Does this line up with God’s will for MY life. Don’t forget to say “Father may I?”.

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10
