Warning! Smoking Can Cause Blindness

When I first met Steve he drove a 1982 Buick Regal. You had to open the trunk with a screwdriver, the driver’s side door would just fly open out of the blue, and it smoked like a chimney. I drove a Ford Escort. The driver’s seat was broken so I had to sit something behind it to keep it from falling backwards.

My poor little Escort finally bit the dust, and we were sharing the Regal. I would drop Steve off at work then go to my job. The car smoked so badly, that people would race out the door at quitting time, to not get stuck behind me. It was almost impossible to take that car through a drive through. The person working the window would’ve choked to death. It was hilarious!

The straw that finally broke the camel’s back was when we were driving up the mountain, and the car was smoking so badly that we were engulfed in smoke! We actually had to pull over because we couldn’t see. Those were the days.

It’s a funny story now, but I remember being really scared when we weren’t able to see. I mean, after all, we were driving up a curvy mountain. Plus, if anyone was behind us, they weren’t able to see either. It could’ve been really bad.

Have you ever had a situation in your life that, like the smoke from our old car, has seemed to engulf you? You can’t see anything ahead or behind, because the here and now has wrapped itself around you, and you feel trapped? I know I certainly have.

I’m reminded of that old hymn we used to sing in church, He’ll Pilot Me. The chorus says, “He’ll pilot me, from day to day. When blinded eyes, can’t see the way.” Sometimes, all we can do is trust. When we’re looking to The Lord, we have no choice but to let Him lead. He has no trouble at all seeing through our ‘smoke’.

When you can’t look ahead or behind, look up! Psalms 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.”

We might get blinded and engulfed by a bad situation in our lives, but God never does! Trust Him to handle even the worst of situations! He will.
