The Tax Man Cometh

This time of year is always kind of rough on the Hawkins’ family. It’s the time of year we dread with every fiber of our being. Tax time.

We own our own business, and we’re not the most organized people in the world. For us, it’s always a scramble at the last minute, to try and get everything together.

This year was no exception, but there was one thing that made an already horrid situation worse. Our computer crashed! To make matters worse, we found out our online back up had not been working for months!

We took our computer to a repair man in hopes he could retrieve our information, but to no avail. We have been having to do all this stuff the old fashion way. Digging through mounds of invoices. Praying. Adding. Figuring. Getting grouchy. Praying. Walking off. Adding. Getting grouchy. Praying some more. You get the picture. It’s enough to make a good baptist drink, out in the open even!

I know the bible says its better to give than to receive, but when it comes to paying taxes, it sure doesn’t feel too good! It feels more like taking your hard earned money and shoving it up a hog’s rear end.

Regardless of how we feel, we must do what the bible says. Romans 13:7 says, Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. So, we will choose to act, not on feelings, but out of love for our God. We will choose to be obedient to God’s word and to the laws of the land.

The same holds true for any situation in our lives. Feelings will lie to you, but God’s word is always true and right. Choose to live your life based on what God says rather than how you feel.
