One night, years ago, in my life BC, some friends and I had a party. Afterwards, we decided we would go to Waffle King and get some great, greasy grub. One of our friends, I’ll call her Ophelia, got a salad with her meal. The waitress brought the salad and placed it in front of Ophelia. What happened next was an event that has been replayed over and over among our friends.
When the waitress sat the salad down, Ophelia had a look in her eyes we had never seen from her. She stared at that thing like a lioness about to devour it’s prey. We just put our forks down and watched in amazement.
I kid you not, it was like she was the only person in the room! She was staring, shaking her head as if to say “mmm mmm mmm! I can’t wait to take a bite of you!” And licking her lips. She then picked up the salad dressing packet, holding it by one end, and started smacking it against her other hand to insure she didn’t leave one single drop. Never once did she break her gaze. She opened the packet of dressing, ever so carefully. She took both hands and began to, methodically squeeze out the dressing. I believe at this point we actually heard a moan. She picked up the fork and held it like a weapon. She began to devour that greenery like a starving animal. I swear to you, it was gone in a couple of seconds. It had to be some kind of a record. Still, we were staring in silence.
When she finished, we braced ourselves. We just knew she was going to let out a huge burp or something, or beat her chest in victory. Instead, she lifted the bowl and looked under it, trying to find just one more bit of the tastiest salad in the whole, wide world.
I guess the realization that it was all gone snapped her out of her trance-like state. It was at that point she realized our food hadn’t been touched, and we were staring at her in amazement. Our eyes locked, and we sat looking at each other, for what seemed like forever. Then, everyone except Ophelia burst out laughing! I mean roaring with laughter! From that point on, we were all making fun of her, showing her exactly what she looked like. It was hilarious!
Do you ever get so into something that you don’t notice what’s going on around you? I know I sure do! My favorite TV show, or Words With Friends or whatever game I might be playing. I’ll rip you a new one in a heartbeat if you interrupt me while playing a game. When it comes to reading God’s word though, I’m very easily distracted. I hate to admit that, but I’m afraid it’s true.
What if we looked at God’s word, and the things of God the way Ophelia looked at that salad? What if we woke up every morning with a hunger for the things of God, instead of the things of this world? Would we live differently? Would we love differently? Would we use our time, our talents, and the money God has blessed us with differently? I bet you we would!
I’m going to pray for that kind of desire for the things of God. The kind of desire that makes me want to devour His word. The kind of desire that’s not easily distracted. The kind of desire that makes people stare. I want to feel about God the way Ophelia felt about her salad!
