We have a ministry at our church called Breakout Jail Ministry. Every Friday night we go into the county jail and do Celebrate Recovery with the men and women. For those who don’t know, CR is like a Christian version of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is an amazing ministry, and I’m completely humbled that God has allowed me to play a small part in his plans.
Often times, people in jail have been written off and forgotten about by friends and family. In most cases, this has been a life pattern for them to be in and out of jail. Most of them would likely be considered junkies. Some of them may have been told that a lowlife junky is all they’ll ever be. God doesn’t see them that way!!
God sees a mess that can be turned into a ministry! As long as someone is breathing, there’s hope for them!
As I stood there, in that jail, worshiping with those incarcerated women, I felt the Holy Spirit so strong. I just closed my eyes and listened to them sing. I swear, it sounded like angels. They were truly worshiping! What a blessing to see people, who could easily feel hopeless, filled with so much hope!
For years I’ve prayed that, one day, my family would worship together. Then it hit me. On that Friday night, in the county jail, we WERE worshiping together!! My husband, Steve, was downstairs with our son Tucker, and they were worshiping! Even though there was a wall separating us, my family was finally worshiping together! Tuck even asked his dad to pray with him! That has NEVER happened! Don’t tell me God’s not moving! God is so good!
Maybe, when I prayed, I should’ve specified that I would’ve preferred to be in church rather than jail, but I’ll take it!! The good thing is, God reached Tucker right where he was! Concrete and bars doesn’t keep Jesus out!
God is changing so many lives through this ministry. Not just the prisoners, but the people who work in the jail, and when these people get out, they’ll pass it on to their families and friends. This ministry will reach far beyond the walls of the county jail!
I’m so thankful for what God is doing through this ministry. Some of the people have even gotten out and come to CR at our church! I can’t wait to see how God is going to use these people!
I’m also so thankful for what God is doing in my family! I can’t wait to see what He has in store for our boy. I’m thankful that God allowed Tuck to be put in a place where He could reach him. God will do, and use whatever He has to, to prove that He loves us!
Thank You Lord, that You don’t forget about those that we sometimes do. Thank You Lord, that you are alive and moving inside the jail. And thank You Father, for letting me be a part of what You’re doing!
The Lord is not slow in doing what he promised—the way some people understand slowness. But God is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to be lost, but he wants all people to change their hearts and lives. 2 Peter 3:9
