When we were kids, my sister, Melissa, and I would sleep together. I’m four years older, so needless to say, I’ve pulled my share of jokes on her.
One of my favorites was when I’d pretend to be talking in my sleep. I’d talk in a whispery, sort if groggy voice and I’d say “Melissa, let’s go outside and play.” She would seem so confused, and she’d always reply, “Sister, it’s dark outside, we can’t go play!” Of course I’d keep it going for awhile, then start laughing. The thing is, she would always fall for it! She was the cutest kid!
We would also try to see who could make the loudest, most realistic sounding poot noises. We would laugh until we got in trouble, but that’s another blog for another time.
It’s easy to believe the ones we love, especially when we’re young. Even when we’re spiritually young, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of placing your trust in your preacher, or a teacher. Trusting those people isn’t necessarily a bad thing; but when you consult them instead of God, that’s when it becomes a problem.
God wants us to put Him first. My friend Nancy put it this way, “go to the throne before you go to the phone.” In other words, pray and ask God what He wants you to do. If you’re still not sure, seek wise counsel, then go back to God for confirmation. Never let a person take the place of God in your life.
There will be a lot of people throughout your life, telling you things you should do. There will be people asking you to go outside and play in the dark, so to speak, but the only person you need to worry about pleasing is God. He’ll never lead you astray. Even if someone is asking you to do something good, that doesn’t mean it’s what God wants you to do. If it is, God will also let you know.
And if someone asks you to go outside and play when it’s dark, don’t do it!
Surely you know that when you give yourselves like slaves to obey someone, then you are really slaves of that person. The person you obey is your master. You can follow sin, which brings spiritual death, or you can obey God, which makes you right with him. Romans 6:16
