God, The Anchorman?

I’m so thankful God is not a news broadcaster! What if, every evening, God did a news report on all the sin we had committed in a 24 hour period? The whole world was watching, and everyone found out everything. And the bad part is, you were never asked any questions beforehand. I mean, there could’ve been a good explanation, or a good excuse for your actions. Is there ever an excuse to sin?

I can see it now, God in all His glory, sitting in front of the camera, all Ron Burgandy like “This just in… Christa Hawkins, age 43, of Springville AL said three cuss words! She also exaggerated the truth, and straight up lied, at least two times. She took a pen from the bank. She walked by a person I was telling her to stop and talk to, blatant disobedience. She had a chance to speak about Me and chickened out. She had a chance to stand up for Truth and she was more worried about being politically correct. She was disrespectful to her husband, and she also watched several inappropriate television shows, and one inappropriate movie. Stay tuned! We will discuss our next sinner after this ad from one of our sponsors.”

Would we watch every night, hoping to get to scoff at other’s mess ups, and praying ours went unnoticed? I’m afraid we would. It seems to be human nature that other people’s sin is much worse than our own. Shame on us.

Aren’t you glad our God’s our anchor, not our anchorman? Aren’t you glad that His mercies are new every morning for everyone; even people who ARE in the spotlight, and people who’s mistakes DO get broadcasted on the news every night. Yes, even for celebrities. Anyone can be forgiven.

God doesn’t want us walking around in shame, and it’s certainly not our job to shame anyone else for their sins. Yes, we are to hold fellow Christians accountable, but it’s to be done in love, and between you and the person you’re confronting. If that doesn’t work, then you bring in another person. Don’t blast it on Facebook or disguise it as a prayer request.

Ok, that being said, I’m going to watch the news and try my hardest not to judge anyone. This is going to be hard!

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:1-2
