Ah…to be married! Every young girl dreams of her knight in shining armor sweeping her off her feet, and riding off together in the sunset. She dreams of the fairy tale life they’ll live together with their children, in laws and pets. She dreams of how amazing it will be to have someone to do things with. Someone she can talk to about anything. Someone she can snuggle with. Someone who makes her laugh and smile. Someone who’s touch makes her giddy with excitement. Someone to share responsibilities with, and just basically do life with. Insert car crashing sound.
Let’s get real here, just for a minute. Those of us who’ve been married for awhile know that fairy tales are beautiful We also know that, if “fairy tale” is how you describe your marriage, you’ve only been married a week, or you’re using hallucinogenic drugs. Either that, or you should be!
Reality is more like this. You get swept off your feet alright, because young love is BLIND AS A BAT! All those things you think are so adorable, more often than not, end up being annoying. Those perfect little angels, you call your children, are messy little varmints that require round the clock attention! And that’s the fun part! Later on, they turn into smart mouthed teenagers, and possibly criminals! Eh, they’ll be a few of you who have no trouble out of your kids…well good for you! All those pets your kids want? Guess who ends up doing most of the work? You guessed it…mom! Then, there’s the in laws. I’ll just say this. Remember ladies, you’re marrying the WHOLE family!
Before you marry, you’ll do all sorts of fun things together! You’ll talk for hours and hours. After marriage, your husband suddenly becomes an avid hunter, because most men enjoy killing things; and all those weekend escapades suddenly come to a screeching halt. And guess who’s left home with the kids?!
Snuggling. There’s nothing sweeter than snuggling. Ladies, after you’re married awhile, there’s no such thing as snuggling! It NEVER stops there! They always want more than a sweet snuggle, if you know what I mean. They only snuggled in the beginning to make you think they liked it. It’s a trap! Not to mention, after work, kids, and housework; when we go to bed, we’re ready to sleep! And suddenly, your king size bed isn’t big enough. He refuses to stay on his side! One minute you’re comfortable and the next there’s a ten ton leg over you, snoring in your ear, and you’re burning up because obviously, he’s a human heater. And those jokes that used to be so cute? Not so cute anymore. How many times can he use “that’s what she said” and “your momma” in a sentence?! The touch that used to make you giddy with excitement has now turned into groping you as you’re doing the dishes or cooking supper. Ugh! Not to mention the fact that they can’t avoid shaking “it” at you every chance they get. I wonder if every time Adam walked by the River of Life, and looked at his reflection, if he checked himself out? Do you think he groped Eve as she cooked his supper? I wonder if Adam shook “it” at Eve? Especially before the fall! They were always naked! Um yes! That had to originate somewhere! Why not in The Garden?
All this stuff is true, even though you won’t find it in the bible, and I say it in jest. Marriage is a beautiful thing, despite all the annoying side effects. Will your marriage be perfect? HECK NO! Will your marriage be worth it? HECK YES! God created marriage and He wants us to enjoy each other. He also created marriage to have a certain order. God, husband, wife, then kids. Too many times parents put their kids above their marriage and that causes chaos. Too often people think they can ‘play church’ and make it. Y’all, if you’re married, you NEED God! And you need Him to be at the head of your family! It’s hard enough without Him.
If you’re married, and it’s not all you thought it would be; don’t worry, that’s normal! But don’t give up. Go straight to God and He can help you work through anything. I know sometimes divorce is unavoidable, but lots of times we rush into something that God could help you work through. A marriage is worth fighting for
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ ? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the savior.
