So, Steve and I are planning to go on our first mission trip. We’re going to Mexico to help build a church. I have to admit that I’m a bit apprehensive. I’ve went over every horrible scenario that could possibly happen.
The plane could crash. Once we get to Mexico we have to take a lengthy bus ride; the bus could break down, and we could be held hostage by mexican bandits. If I forgot and left my wedding ring on, someone could cut off my finger for the gold. We could get sick. Something could happen back home and we couldn’t get back quick enough. I might not have a comfortable place to sleep, or a hot enough shower! I could be kidnapped and sold into the sex slave trade! Because I’m sure they’re SO looking for slightly chunky, middle-aged, delusional women.
After I finished listing all the possible (and not so possible) threats, God gently reminded me, as He has to quite often, this trip isn’t about me. This trip is about sharing His love. It’s about giving of ourselves, and sacrificing a little comfort to help those who have so much less. It’s all about God’s glory and His power. It’s about allowing Him to work through us so that others can have what we have, and to know what we know….that Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! And that through Him anyone can have joy and peace, and most importantly, eternal life! No matter where or how you live.
I love how God handles His children, especially the ones like me who, way too often, tend to think that it’s all about ‘me’. He always gently nudges me back to truth, and His word, which says to put others before myself.
When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others. Philippians 2:3-4
