Our high school band director, Mr. Sims, was by far my favorite teacher ever! He had to be the most patient man on the face of the earth to have put up with three hundredish students.
Don’t get me wrong, I witnessed him lose his temper a time or five hundred, but with everything he put up with, I’m surprised he didn’t kill us.
There was one time several of us had straws, and we were shooting peas at him. He would be standing on his podium talking and pow! out of nowhere, he’d get hit with a pea upside the head. A few minutes later, pow! someone else would hit him with another pea. This went on for a little while, and he held it in for a while thinking we’d stop. He should’ve known that we wouldn’t stop until he exploded. Which we thought was hilarious! I feel bad now, but back then, it was downright comedic!
He never knew where the peas were coming from, which I’m sure added to his anger. I suppose it’s a good thing he didn’t, he might have strangled us.
In life, we all have things that, like the shooting peas, hit us upside the head, and knock us for a loop. Sickness, divorce, death of a loved one, injuries, addictions, financial issues, depression; you name it, any of it could happen to the best of us. As long as we live we will be faced with troubles. If you never have troubles, then you’re delusional and you obviously live in a fantasy world.
Mr. Sims couldn’t really do anything about the shooting peas, because he had no idea who was shooting them. However, when troubles are thrown at us, there is something we can do! We have a Savior who loves nothing more than to swoop in and save the day! All we have to do is ask.
Things may not always work out the way we want. Our loved one might die. You could lose your house, or even a limb. Your spouse could leave. Your children could go astray. Here’s the deal though…even when horrible things happen, God can make things ok! He can help get you through any hardship, or any trial, and He can make you whole again. Trust. It’s all about trust.
We serve a powerful God! A God who, unlike Mr. Sims, knows who’s ‘shooting the peas’ . Trust Him with your situation, and rest easy knowing He’s holding you up with His righteous right hand!
All that I am, praise the Lord;
everything in me, praise his holy name.
My whole being, praise the Lord and do not forget all his kindnesses. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He saves my life from the grave and loads me with love and mercy. He satisfies me with good things and makes me young again, like the eagle. Psalm 103:1-5
I have told you all this so that you will have peace of heart and mind. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows; but cheer up, for I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
