My mawmaw was the world’s most horrible photographer, but she sure loved taking pictures. She’d say, “Let me make y’all’s picture. I need to strike up the rest of this film.” That used to crack me up! So we’d pose, and she’d “strike up the rest of her film”. After all the film was “struck” she’d have one of us rewind the film, take it out, and replace it, because she never could get the hang of her new, high tech, 35mm camera. Which was evident not just by the fact that she couldn’t change the film, but also because in just about every picture, she cut someone’s head off. That didn’t matter to mawmaw! The picture still went in her photo album.
And I’m not talking about a digital album. I’m talking about the old albums that you peeled up the clear, plastic page, and stuck the picture to the thick, somewhat sticky cardboard, then put the clear page back down, that never actually stuck once you pulled it loose. Without fail, every time you looked through the albums, pictures were falling out everywhere.
Life, at times, can be a lot like mawmaw’s photography, and those old photo albums. When we look at the things, and people around us, and mentally flip through the pages of our lives, we feel like our film is all “struck up” and that things are, like the pictures in the old photo albums, falling apart around us. Sometimes, by the way some people act, you wonder if their heads are cut off! We wish we could rewind, like the old film, and do things differently. We wonder how God can sit back and do nothing. Why He doesn’t just zap people, or snap His holy fingers and put a stop to some things.
Then we remember that God didn’t create the world to be bad. He created a perfect beautiful world, without sin. He also created humans with free will, and they chose, just like we do, to willingly sin, and with sin comes sickness, death, and consequences.
Fortunately for us, God’s a great photographer, and He’s made a picture of each of us that He knows by heart! He knows everything about everyone and loves us the same! He never strikes up all His film, and He doesn’t cut anyone’s head off! Every person has the opportunity to be in His family album. All you have to do is accept and believe.
And if you feel like your world is falling apart around you. If you mentally flip through life’s pictures and wish you could rewind, rest assured, God will give you new and better pictures to look at, He’ll even photoshop your old ones and turn them into masterpieces! Just trust Him. He’s in control, and He always will be!
What’s the price of two or three pet canaries? Some loose change, right? But God never overlooks a single one. And he pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries.
