So, this morning I’m reading my bible, and I’m reading in John chapter 10, He’s talking to Jews and He’s “speaking as plainly as he can.”
1-5 “Let me set this before you as plainly as I can. If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen instead of going through the gate, you know he’s up to no good—a sheep rustler! The shepherd walks right up to the gate. The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognize his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice. They won’t follow a stranger’s voice but will scatter because they aren’t used to the sound of it.” Jesus told this simple story, but they had no idea what he was talking about.
Sometimes I get cracked up when I read Jesus’ teachings. They’re easy for me to understand because I grew up hearing about the bible and I’ve heard Jesus’ teachings explained; but what if I’d lived back then?
I mean here He is, people are trying to decide if He’s THE messiah, and He’s talking about sheep and sheep rustlers? Would I have thought Jesus to be a maniac? I’m sure I would’ve been thinking to myself, “If this is as plain as it gets, I must be an idiot, because I sure as heck don’t get it! I mean, no one likes a sheep stealer!” I think I would’ve been wondering what was so great and wonderful about what He’d said! That’s when it hit me. Even though I’d grown up in church, and had certain things explained; when I would try to read the bible for myself, it might as well have been in Hebrew, because I didn’t understand a word! It seemed like jibber jabber! Then one day, God’s Word came alive to me!
What was the difference? It’s simple. No one can understand God’s Word without the Holy Spirit. When I was truly seeking Him, and reading the bible because I wanted a better relationship with God, that’s when He spoke to me! It was so cool!
Verses I’d heard all my life like, Proverbs 3:5, trust in The Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, suddenly meant something to me! I’m no bible scholar by any means, but when I ask the Holy Spirit to help me understand, He never fails to show up!
The bible is more than just a storybook. It’s God’s living Word! God’s Word is like a lamp that guides our steps, and a light that shows the path we should take. His laws are good and fair. *Psalm 119:105-106
Pick up your bible and read it! Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. Then see what a difference it makes in your life!
