Have you ever seriously thought what it would be like to have been in Mary’s shoes. Just to be clear, I’m not talking about Mary J Blige, or the Mary who had a little lamb, or the Mary of whom the whole world wanted to know why she was “buggin”. You may have to be a product of the eighties to get that last reference. Anyway, I’m talking about THE Mary! The mother of Jesus. Could you imagine trying to explain THAT to your parents and friends?!
I remember having to tell my mom I was pregnant. It was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I was excited, nervous, embarrassed, totally ignorant of what was ahead of me, and scared to death of how mom was going to react, and what she and everyone else would think of me. People would definitely know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had engaged in premarital sex! Although I pretended that some people still thought that I had not! I have to say that my mom handled things like a champ! But imagine poor, young Mary trying to explain to everyone that she was pregnant but had NOT been with a man!
I know she was chosen by God. I know the angel came to her…..yada, yada, yada, but surely there was some point where Mary was like “Oh yeah right! As if anyone’s going to believe this!” (Redneck Mary might’ve said, “Y’all ain’t gone believe ‘is!” Sorry couldn’t resist) Maybe she even thought, “How fair is this?! I’m pregnant, I get to get fat and be miserable, and I didn’t even get to have any fun getting in this shape!” I’m sure she thought that she and Joseph were surely done for! Image what Joseph must’ve been thinking! Most likely they’d hardly spent any time together, especially not alone! He had to be pretty ticked off at first.
I’m sure there were people who didn’t believe Mary. There were people who may have judged her and talked about her, who knows. I’m sure there were those who thought Joseph to be an idiot for believing Mary’s outlandish story! What we do know is, that God prepared the hearts of those who needed preparing. He went ahead of her and worked it all out for her so that things could go as He’d planned. This is what the bible says in Matthew 1:29-21. “Now when Joseph had decided to act on his instincts, a messenger of the Lord came to him in a dream. Messenger of the Lord: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to wed Mary and bring her into your home and family as your wife. She did not sneak off and sleep with someone else—rather, she conceived the baby she now carries through the miraculous wonderworking of the Holy Spirit. She will have a son, and you will name Him Jesus, which means “the Lord saves,” because this Jesus is the person who will save all of His people from sin.” See, God took care of all the details, and Mary and Joseph trusted God! Dang! You’d have no other choice in a situation like that!!
We are often put, or put ourselves, in situations where our only option is to trust that God handles things. It’s not always, even though it can seem to be, such a bad place to be. It’s easier for God to handle things with us out of His way. Trust me, you’ll get out of His way one way or another. His will is going to be accomplished with or without our cooperation.
Just know that, just like He did for Mary and Joseph, God will take care of things for us too, if we let Him. He’s a god who’s in all the details. He loves to save the day! And He loves when we depend fully on Him. Just don’t try convincing anyone that you’re pregnant and you didn’t have sex. That won’t fly these days! That only worked for Mary! You’ll not only be knocked up, but it’s highly likely you’d be locked up too! In the looney bin!
The Lord himself will go ahead of you. He will be with you. He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you. So don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope.” Deuteronomy 31:8
