I was texting with my friend Kenny the other day and, as usual, we were cracking up at something we used to do back in the day. I must admit, we were hilarious! We never ran anything into the ground or grated on anyone’s nerves. In case you didn’t recognize, that last sentence was dripping in sarcasm. The fact that we’re hilarious? That one was, and is still true. I love us!
Kenny used to come over to play my piano and we’d sing our hearts out until Steve was ready to burn the piano. Sometimes we’d sing seriously, but most of the time we were purposely butchering a perfectly, beautiful, old hymn. We’d make up funny words or actions to them. Sometimes we’d even throw in some cuss words, just for emphasis of course. Remember, this was our lives BC.
One, in particular, we loved to torment people with was an old hymn called Til’ The Storm Passes By. We’d put the party we were hosting on hold, gather an audience and commence singing. We’d sing beautifully too; until it came to one line in the song. No one would be expecting anything. Some might even be moved by the song. You know how a bunch of drunks are, they cry over anything!
The line was, “Many times satan whispers there is no need to try. For there’s no end of sorrow, there’s no hope by and by”. Everything would be beautiful until it came to the part satan supposedly whispered. I would stick my pointy fingers up on each side of my head, to signify horns of course. Get in a stance similar to a bull about to charge; because everyone knows the devil has hooves. And I would say that line in the creepiest, evil sounding whisper I could muster up. Naturally laughter would ensue, especially from Kenny and myself, after all, no one thought we were as funny as we did. Ah…the good ol’ days!
To this day, I’ll get a laugh at the expense of almost anything, but I take things of a spiritual nature seriously. The enemy DOES whisper things in our ears! The thing is, it doesn’t sound like a creepy whisper. Most always it sounds exactly like our own voice! That’s the scary part! Sometimes it’s really hard to know who’s saying what.
That’s why we’re to stay in the Word, and be in communication with our Heavenly Father. If God tells us to do anything, it will line up with His Word; but how will we know what the Word says if we don’t read it?
Don’t be fooled by the devil’s trickery! Stay armed and ready, because crap will happen, and you can bank on that. Thankfully, through Christ, we have the tools we need to overcome any crap that comes our way! If you haven’t spoken with Him, or read His Word in awhile..DO IT! It’ll change things! I promise!
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
