I’ve always been afraid of failure, so there’s been very few times in my life that I can actually say I’ve worked really hard for something. If I didn’t think I’d do well, or that something wouldn’t be easy, I just wouldn’t do it. That’s sad to admit but it’s true. It’s this attitude that, vert often, makes me ask “Why bother?!”.
Why do we bother praying when we’re not seeing results? Why bother witnessing when it seems like everything in the world counteracts anything we do. Why bother trying to help someone when they don’t want to help themselves. Why waste our time? I’d be experiencing symptoms such as growing nose, pants spontaneously combusting, and little bumps on my tongue if I didn’t admit to feeling this way more often than not. I’d like to stay in my own little bubble of comfort if that’s ok with you!
God, however, has a way of bringing us to the end of ourselves and showing us that when the going gets tough, He gives, those of us who are scaredy cats, the strength we need to keep on keepin’ on!
He’s allowed me to be in situations to where I’ve had to fight for my marriage. He’s given me the strength to fight for my child, which mostly meant getting out of His way! He’s opened up doors for me to use the gifts and talents He’s graciously given me, (the same ones I used to be too afraid to show, or that I abused) to use for His glory. He’s given me everything I needed, when I thought I had nothing!
Why bother you ask? Because there’s a lost and dying world who needs to hear the Good News. Because people need to be loved, and know that they’re never alone. And when our pride gets in the way, and we’re bitter because things aren’t working out the way WE want, or fast enough for us? Sit back and think about how things worked out for Jesus! He didn’t exactly want to go through all He went through either did He? He did it because the end result was worth the pain! He did it because His Father asked Him to! Just like He’s asking us to keep on keepin’ on for His cause! Because, gosh darn it, people need Jesus!
Don’t give up! We, as Christians, have to be strong! There’s work yet to be done. Our friends and families need us. We need each other. Don’t be afraid to fail. God always restores, and He always provides! He’s Jehovah Jireh!
O Timothy, my son, be strong with the strength Christ Jesus gives you. For you must teach others those things you and many others have heard me speak about. Teach these great truths to trustworthy men who will, in turn, pass them on to others.
Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Jesus Christ, just as I do; and as Christ’s soldier, do not let yourself become tied up in worldly affairs, for then you cannot satisfy the one who has enlisted you in his army. Follow the Lord’s rules for doing his work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize. Work hard like a farmer who gets paid well if he raises a large crop. Think over these three illustrations, and may the Lord help you to understand how they apply to you. 2 Timothy 2: 1-7
