What’s In YOUR Closet? Why People Dislike The Church And Church People

It’s no wonder a lot of people strongly dislike the church and/or Christians. We proudly display our fish and crosses on our bumpers, or hanging from our rear view mirrors. We will gladly wear a cool religious T- shirt with a bible verses on it, or a five dollar shirt with our church’s name on the front, but outward appearances only account for so much.

How effective are those things when someone sees you sloshed at the bar? Does it do anything for the Kingdom when we’re flinging people a bird in traffic? How about when you rip the poor girl, behind the counter at McDonald’s, a new one because she messed up your order? What about when Christians hurl hate at homosexuals, but think nothing of their buddy who’s having premarital sex with two or three different people? Let me paint you another vivid picture.

What about the woman caught up in prostitution who finally decides to go to church only to see her last ‘john’, and his perfect little family, schmoozing with the preacher?! What if you died and someone was cleaning out your closets? What would they find hidden behind your Christian T-shirts? Would they find a plethora of porn, and various other things that you’d crap your pants if your church members knew you had in your possession?

How badly have we polluted God’s church? How aware are we of those watching us? How set apart are we from the rest of the world? When people see us, do they believe that we’re real or do they just assume we’re as fake as Dolly Parton’s boobs, or Joan River’s face?

Don’t get me wrong, people are going to mess up. I’m not saying we should or can be perfect people. I’m saying that our actions should, to the best of our ability through Christ, match what we say! Luke warm doesn’t cut it! Straddling the fence is unacceptable, not to mention rough on the nether region!

We should be loving people, not judging or condemning them. It is not our job to convict the lost. That’s the Holy Spirit’s job. Our part is to live lives that are inviting to those who don’t know Jesus and to love them just as they are. We should ooze so much peace, love, and justness that they want what we have. When unbelievers see us going through trials, they should see our faith, not our fretting.

It’s time to be real! It’s time to stop putting on a facade of goodness and to simply be good. When we screw up, let’s not be afraid to admit it! Let’s learn from it, and use our experiences to help others. No more walking around defeated! We belong to Christ! Let’s start acting like it! There’s too many families under attack. It’s time to show the world, and the devil who’s boss! There’s work to be done and it ain’t gonna do itself!

But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. 1 Peter 2:9-10
