Have you ever been asked to do something you know you’re unqualified to do, and the feeling you get when thinking about doing said thing is, to say the least, underwhelming?? However, you know, for whatever crazy reason, God’s telling you to do it? Yeah. Reckon why God does stuff like that? He knows good and dang well you’ve never done anything of the sort. He knows the thought of doing any such thing makes you about as nervous as a “lady of ill repute” attending the Sunday morning service at the First Baptist Church! Yet, He has us do it anyway!
When He asks us to do something that seems so out there for us; does He think we’re like Abraham, or Moses or Joseph?! And I’m not referring to the group of old Jewish men who eat at Jack’s in the mornings. Sorry, I guess old men congregating at Jack’s for breakfast is a southern thing. Anyway, who does He think we are?! We’re not living in Bible times where they carried God around in a tent! How are we supposed to do things that are out if our realm of expertise or supernatural even? I’ll tell you how!!! The Holy Spirit! That’s how!
We don’t have to look for a sign like a cloud of smoke. The Holy Spirit lives inside of us! Jesus told His disciples this in John chapter 14 “In solemn truth I tell you, anyone believing in me shall do the same miracles I have done, and even greater ones, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask him for anything, using my name, and I will do it, for this will bring praise to the Father because of what I, the Son, will do for you.” We don’t do, because we don’t ask! We don’t do because we don’t trust.
When God told Moses that he would be the one to lead His people out of Egypt, Moses pitched a fit! He made excuse after excuse. He said, “But I’m not the person for a job like that!” Moses exclaimed.” Then God told him, “I will certainly be with you, and this is the proof that I am the one who is sending you: When you have led the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God here upon this mountain!” But Moses still kept whining! He made excuses like “I can’t speak to these people! I have as speech impediment.” God tried to reassure Moses. “Who makes mouths?” God asked him. “Isn’t it I, the Lord? Who makes a man so that he can speak or not speak, see or not see, hear or not hear? Now go ahead and do as I tell you, for I will help you to speak well, and I will tell you what to say.” Still Moses kept whining. He whined south that God got mad and said “Fine! Take your brother! He talks just fine!”
Moses missed out on showing off God’s ability to use us in spite of our weaknesses. God could’ve gotten even more glory when everyone heard the dude with the speech impediment speaking clearly. And we can glorify The Lord by allowing Him to use us! We can do great things! We can glorify God even though we’re about as jacked up as they come! We can move mountains! And we can do all these things through Christ and with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives inside us! Let’s stop letting doubt and fear keep us from being obedient! Every day our time is getting shorter. Let’s make the time we have left count!
