I’M BAAACK! I hope y’all missed me as much as I’ve missed writing to y’all! I have had one very tiring, somewhat stressful, sleep deprived, constipated, rushed, most wonderful, Spiritfilled, rewarding weekends of my life!
How, you might ask, can I describe an event in such contradictory terms? That’s what we Jesus-lovin’ folks like to refer to as joy!
Joy is not dependent on our circumstances. Joy doesn’t go away just because one needs more sleep, or is stressed, or rushed, or because one desperately needs to have a bowel movement! My friends, joy does not waver! And being happy is not the same as being joyful. Coloring makes me happy. Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups make me happy. Blue eye shadow makes me really happy! And of course sunshine on my shoulders also makes me happy! (Some of you are old enough to get that last one ;-).) But not a single thing in that list could possibly bring me joy!
Webster defines Joy like this : The emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires. But I believe joy can only be defined like this : Trusting Jesus no matter how we feel.
Y’all, no one has ever found joy in well-being, success, or even by possessing everything they’ve ever desired, unless ALL those things are centered around the One who gives us the ability to succeed, and Who created all possessions! I can promise you that in the darkest times of my life, I’ve also had Joy and peace! And as crazy as that may make me sound, it’s true! True joy only comes from trusting Jesus with every part of our lives!
Things will get bad! We’ll go through dark times. We’ll feel scared, unsure, and anxious! We may even get constipated! The thing is, when we KNOW that we KNOW that God can and does see, hear and handle ALL things, we can trust that He’s going to see that what needs to happen will happen! And if it doesn’t go the way we thought it should? We can rest assured that He will be there to comfort and heal us, and that He knows what’s best! That, my friends is joy!
This weekend at Birmingham Tres Dias #32, you better believe joy was in the house! Tired, nervous, and sometimes unsure people trusted Jesus enough to step out on a limb and be vulnerable to help further God’s Kingdom! Burdens were lifted, chains were broken and hearts were set free! I’ll skip a few bowel movements any day in exchange for that! How ’bout you?!
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life (or bowel movement) for his friends. John 15:13
