What an awesome Christmas we had here at the Hawkins’ house! We’ve definitely had a rough year but God is good! We had fun at mom’s despite the fact that she couldn’t cook :-). Tucker totally enjoyed himself in all the festivities! Those of you who know anything at all about TBIs understand just how huge it is to enjoy yourselves at gatherings. I wish I could tell you that Tucker enjoying the festivities was because of my wonderful parenting, but I can assure you it’s not! Trust me, I’d love to take credit for that! How much stuff do we take credit for, knowing that we couldn’t do anything good without God?! Do we really give God enough credit for the good in our lives?
Yesterday our pastor, Gresh, talked about all the things that went on in our church this past year. There were hundreds baptized! We’ve grown like crazy! Collectively the church gave a sacrificialy offering of 50 something thousand dollars, and that was one offering, to improve our children’s ministry. He talked about plans for the upcoming year, but the most important thing he said was that God gets all the glory for all these good things that are happening! He said that it’s only because of God that any of this was accomplished! People aren’t coming to the Lord because of our good works. It isn’t because “we’ve got this” that lives are being changed! Yes, we will make plans for the upcoming years at our church, but if God says to change them?? They’ll be changed!
None of us can do anything good without God! It’s God who gives Gresh his sermons. It’s the Holy Spirit who compels people to give sacrificialy. Jesus is the One who’s changing the lives of the prisoners we visit! If we, for one minute, think that any of these things are happening because we’re that good…watch out! The Message bible puts it like this,”First pride, then the crash—the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.” *Proverbs 16:18. Y’all ain’t no count at all without Jesus! In fact, we’re rotten to the core!
This morning I was reading in the book of Amos. All I can say is we’d better be turning back to God! I know Amos is Old Testament, but…Amos 6:12-13 really stuck out to me. It says this, “Can horses run on rocks? Can oxen plow the sea? Stupid even to ask—but no more stupid than what you do when you make a mockery of justice and corrupt and sour all that should be good and right. And just as stupid is your rejoicing in how great you are when you are less than nothing—and priding yourselves on your own tiny power!” TLB. Y’all, anything good we do is because of Jesus! Yes we have gifts and talents, but where’d we get them? Are those talents really blessed if we don’t use them to glorify God? I mean, if you can sing well, you can sing. But if you’re using your talent for something other than what God intended, is it really doing you any good? Are you storing up treasure in heaven or setting yourself up for destruction?
From now on, if we do something good, let’s make it clear to everyone that it’s not us! It’s only because we have Christ living inside us that we’re able to do any good! Thank You Holy Spirit for convicting me.
